Heavenly Hallways

I have a real soft spot for hallways. Traditionally seen in older homes, especially villas, to me they speak of character and charm. Often located at the entrance they provide a place for hooks and console tables, but depending on the size, they can almost lend themselves to being an extra room to style. I'm so pleased our new home has an entrance hallway. It's not big, but I'm looking forward to decorating it. Here are some hallways that I'm loving right now.

Bright and white with pale wooden floors and splashes of greenery. Perfection!

I love gallery hallways. This one has a stunning mix of framed photographs and art, both wall mounted and on display shelves. The herringbone floor and gorgeous cushions add texture and warmth to the pristine white canvas.

White punctuated by a row of black wall lamps and herringbone flooring, this intriguing hallway has a lovely, serene quality.

Once again the striped rug comes in to play, this time as a striking hallway runner.

Here's an example of a modern, architecturally designed house with an incredible hallway. The blackboard wall is a great idea for a family home.

This character hallway features a remarkable dome ceiling, a simple console table, framed pictures and plants.

The extra wide Dinesen floorboards I featured here work beautifully in this spacious foyer-style hallway.

A rustic bench, glass jars and vintage touches make this light-filled hallway so pretty and textural.

Wooden Flooring | Three Ways

Today is Anzac Day, a national holiday for both NZ and Australia and we're having a very lazy day around home. I was going to take a break from the blog today but I get really excited about flooring and decided this post couldn't wait. When it came to building, the pale wooden flooring I've always longed for was at the top of my list of must-haves and I'm thrilled that it's finally happening!

If I had the luxury of choosing any brand in the world, hands down I'd pick Dinesen. This home in Copenhagen I wrote about a while back is a prime example of how amazing their flooring looks. Dinesen produce an exquisite signature floorboard with extraordinary dimensions. Long, wide planks provide a beautifully simple yet elegant look. Every time I see them my heart beats a little faster.

I'm also slightly obsessed with Herringbone floors right now. This parquet flooring, which also comes in a chevron pattern, dates back to 1684 in Versailles. It goes to explain why I love seeing it in beautiful old character homes styled with a touch of French flair.

If I was lucky enough to have herringbone flooring in my home, I'd keep clutter to a minimum in order to show off the beautiful pattern. Simple monochrome styling allows for the floors to stand out.

Lastly, I can't go past white painted floorboards. Distinctively Scandinavian, more and more people are embracing the trend here in NZ and I can see why. Providing a gloriously fresh canvas for adding texture and pops of colour, I particularly love white painted flooring paired with rustic wood accents, exposed bricks and a large cowhide rug.

Homes to Inspire | Passion for Pastels

If you've been following this week you'll have seen my post on Colour Tools. I mentioned I'm crazy about pastels right now, so I thought this pastel themed home which I spotted in Urbis would be a great one to share today.

Located in Melbourne, this mid-century modern home is the project of interior designers Hecker Guthrie. Although it was architecturally sound and had plenty of character, the owners wanted to make changes to the interior layout and finishes. By simply knocking out a few walls, they achieved the open-plan-style living they desired whilst maintaining the integrity of the original house. Oak flooring and a fresh white palette has provided an ideal canvas to add colour, in this case soft pastel shades. Wishbone chairs in mint and lavender, pink and blue Eames elephants and dusky coloured stools are some of the key pieces of furniture that feature throughout.

The white and pastel theme is further enhanced by earthy tones in the living area and pops of neon on the kitchen shelf.

The Wishbone chairs work equally well in the office. I love the choice of mint here.

The beautiful artwork in the dining area adds contrast to the gentle colour scheme, and depth to the space, while metallics add texture. I love these pendant lights!

Touches of marble, wood and greenery add texture and definition to the all white kitchen.

The white-washed exterior provides a striking entrance to the home.

To tie in once again with the Colour Tools feature, I've used photoshop to extract the pastel shades used in the home. Which is your favourite colour?

I absolutely adore the combination of white, wood and pastels. With the addition of designer furniture, beautiful artwork and homewares in neutrals and shimmering metallics this is definitely a home I'd love to live in!

Homes to Inspire | Floored in Copenhagen

The restoration of this striking home in the heart of Copenhagen took five years to complete. The owner, Danish financier Mads Ulrich is clearly a perfectionist and renovated in stages while dividing his time between Copenhagen and Los Angeles.

The standout features are without doubt the flooring and lighting. The original floors which were several hundred years old and very worn have been replaced with wide pine planks from Dinesen. The new flooring is a show-stopper. I'm completely captivated by it. Dinesen also created the dining table, kitchen table, guest bed and small built-in benches around the home from leftover planks.

Ulrich collaborated with highly sought-after interior designer Anouska Hempel. Her exceptional skills with lighting have helped create a soft, cosiness despite the large spaces. White walls and an impressive art collection give the home a beautiful gallery feel.
